DONG Energy and Eversource Energy are partnering to develop the Bay State Wind Farm in Massachusetts. The proposed project is located 15-20 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. The wind farm will provide potentially 2,000 megawatts of electricity to power about one million homes in Massachusetts. DONG Energy is a global leader in offshore wind and will guide the development and construction of the offshore components of the project. Eversource Energy is a major transmission builder in New England and will control the set up the onshore transmission system for the project. These two major companies have a 50-50 partnership and will jointly develop and control the project. The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management leased the 300 square mile project area to DONG Energy in April of 2015. The state of Massachusetts promotes progress in offshore wind and the first comprehensive energy bill passed in August, 2016 mandates state utilities to purchase 1,600 MW of offshore wind power by 2027. The Bay State Wind Farm should produce electricity in the early 2020s.
